OUR STORY
Our founder and head coach, Jou, grew up in South Auckland feeling like he didn’t belong. Being a Māori-Chinese mixed kid, fitting in wasn’t easy. Martial arts always inspired him, but it wasn’t until he discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu that he found a sport where strategy and technique mattered more than size or strength.
Today, as a black belt, he has turned his journey into a mission: to create an Auckland-based jiu-jitsu gym where everyone can belong, learn, and grow. That’s why we proudly offer a mix of class types, courses and learning opportunities, including
Beginner-Friendly Classes: Learn at your own pace, regardless of fitness level.
Self-Defence Skills: Practical techniques to protect yourself in real-life situations.
Community & Support: Join a welcoming environment where students of all ages and backgrounds thrive.
Expert Coaching: Led by a black belt coach focused on teaching, not gatekeeping.
Whether you’re looking to boost confidence, improve fitness, or something totally unique to you, Syzygy Jiu-Jitsu is here to guide you. Every student is part of the family, and every step on the mat is a step toward personal transformation.
